Love Pickle Creek & Whispering Pine trails. The creek is lovely to walk along or to have a picnic next to it on one of the many rock formations. Good workout, too, especially if you do all 12 or so miles. Just wish it was a little closer to St. Louis.

My wife and I have had 2 great overnight hikes here. The Backcountry campsites are great and they are spaced apart well. I would definitely stick to these campsites since more traffic can mean less critters you don't like (such as black widows)–in my experience, other flattened out spots off trail may be deer laying spots or home of many composting bugs. Creeks run throughout the loops. Lots of birds, turtles, skinks, and small fish to keep you company! Trails are very well marked and visible. I know of one dog being bit by a poisonous snake so just be a little watchful around waters. This is a go to trail for getting your feet wet for backpacking. Trails are marked as difficult because of occasional rockiness and steep grade (very doable).

The last time the glaciers got this far south they deposited a unique mixture of nutrients in the soil which yields an array of gorgeous flowering plants. If you are a hiker you need to go there. History buffs may be interested to know that one of DeSoto's proposed routes West led him generally along highway 32 between where Ste Genevieve and Farmington Missouri now stand. The caravan followed close to the stream running through Hawn as it was a source of salt.

Hawn State Park is very nice pretty! We booked RV site #19. It was across from the playground and close to the shower house. Ot has a huge empty area with no neighbors on the side. It had laundry machines and a sink to do dishes. The creek was directly behind us and we could walk across the stones to explore it. Host was very nice. Electric was at the site and we filled with water on site before getting to our site. Dump station was wide enough on the way out. Shower was large, but shared with a wasp. Overall we loved it there!
