Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital

Description

The first appointments on the staff establishment were made with effect from 1 May 1980. In August 1980 Mrs E.B. Bolani joined the staff as a Senior Sister and she was subsequently promoted to Chief Professional Nurse and Nursing Service Manager, the first nurse to be appointed under Mrs Bolani was Sister N.G. Shange. The first Medical Superintendent at that time was, Dr W.G. McNeill and Hospital Secretary was Mr J.J.F. Coertzen.

The hospital was officially opened on 20 March 1987 and the guest of honour being the honourable Dr M.G. Buthelezi who paid a special tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Arthur Edward Mshiyeni ka Dinuzulu after whom the hospital was named.

The hospital has over the last twenty-five years, grown from strength to strength. Today it is designated a level 2 Specialist Hospital in the Durban Functional Region, with most of its Clinical Specialist sections functioning in conjunction with the Medical School of the University of Natal.

The actual population it serves is difficult to estimate because of the ever mushrooming informal settlements, but our statistics estimate the population to be approximately 2 million. Today the hospital has 1,200 beds and attends to an average of 1,500 patients per day in the outpatients’ clinics. Difficult times have been met by the hospital in its process of development and the hospital management is grateful that the hospital has continued to expand and improve.

Much emphasis is being put on primary health care which is being rendered by the satellite clinics. However, violence in the community has resulted in closure of after hour service in theses clinics. Thus the hospital is rendering Primary as well as Secondary Health Services.

With the continuing close co-operation between management and staff, and the support of the community, Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital has the potential to continue to provide an even more extensive service to its patients and is set to become one of the major role players in the Durban Functional Region.

The present management structure consists of the Hospital Manager, Nursing Manager, Medical Manager, Human Resource Manager, Finance Manager, Systems Manager, Pharmacy Manager.

I would give zero stars if I can. My mom and I waited more than 16 hours to see a doctor and we had a scheduled appointment. The nurses are extremely rude. Security personnel too. All round BAD hospital.
The medical care workers especially in ward A1 the psyc ward are world class.
Though you wait in a lot of places, the medical staff is professional and clued up in what they're doing. Its really not as bad as people make it out to be
Would've given Zero stars if possible This is what I found on my baby hand after we took him from the Mortuary you people are so Careless even during labour the way you were treating me yhuuuu I told u a thousand times that I feel like something is coming ya'll kept telling me I am not a doctor..Mmmh you get paid to be rude to us I will never forget even the nurses who were helping me mmmh bad service shame Never ever again will I set my foot there
Worst hospital. I’ve never been so traumatised. Nurses at labor Ward are so rude and uncaring. My heart still aches till this day. Imagine going through labor and here the nurses are being mean to you. I’m actually thinking of suing this one nurse who was on my case encouraging the other nurses as well. I will never forget her face.
My daughter was admitted last week Friday she has seen her Dr once he has ordered tests to be done on her chart but not one test has been booked. Every staff member in C2 have been very efficient and they are extremely patient and considerate. Thank you.
A little crowded but good medical care.
This is THE worst Hospital in Durban, possible number 1 or 2 nationally, with the level of negligence, unproffessionalism, prejudice and gross disrespect the patients suffer under the medical personnel to security staff. No accountability whatsoever.
03/09/2021...Went to the hospital ANC department for the first time. The staff members were helpful including the trainees but I won't forget how bad the other nurse treated me actually us, she had a bad attitude, scolding and seemed to never care about all of us. She didn't even want to help me with checking the Bp while it's her duty, she had to make me look bad in front of everyone and made me to go back to the benches without helping me. She's a very bad image of the hospital and I hoped to never go back to that hospital again unfortunately I have another appointment
