Parkway Bakery & Tavern

About

With more than a hundred years of memories in the walls, Parkway is a New Orleans legend. Thank you for stopping by, friend!

Story

There are a few rare and golden universals that everyone—whether transplant or fifth-generation New Orleans—can agree on: red beans and rice, the Saints, and Parkway for poor boys.

Walk into our restaurant and you’re bound to find a true cross section of New Orleans. It’s where the old guard and the new guard can both let their guard down. It’s a kind of oasis. Everyone’s in here for the same things: good food, a pleasant atmosphere, and great company.

We serve the same poor boys to everyone who walks through our door, from actual poor boys to the President of the United States. And we’re just as honored to be doing either.

This is probably the best Po Boy experience you're going to have. Their service is great (though the line is long). The food is good and attracts locals and tourists alike. The core Po Boy options (shrimp, catfish, hot sausage, etc) are always good, and the additional options (try the fried pickles slices) add a fun twist without going into being gimmicky. I'm taking all my out of town visitors here from now on.

This place was packed, yet there was plenty of parking. The restaurant happens to have its own private parking lot which was convenient. Upon arrival, the line was out the door. Lucky us, a gentleman told us to go to the bar. According to him, that's what the locals do. Though the bar area was crowded, we were able to secure a table, place the order, and receive our food very quickly. I had a catfish Po Boy and my friend had a shrimp on bun. We shared an order of fries, which work plenty for both of us. The catfish Po Boy had two large fillet cut catfish pieces which was plenty. The French bread was fresh and the vegetables or as well. My friend had more shrimp than bun, it was like the shrimp were falling everywhere. I would recommend this place to locals as well as tourist, it is a great representation of good New Orleans cuisine. The prices were average I found the french fries to be a bit overpriced, yet they were tasty.

The building is interesting and historical. The food is exceptionally good. The staff are excellent. It is always crowded and there is always a line. It is always well worth the wait.

Awesome place to eat! I was surprised how busy they were at 2PM, but after eating there, I now know why. Great story - opened in 1911 and only closed temporarily after Hurricane Katrina. I ordered the Parkway Surf n Turf (shrimp and roast beef) dressed. It was so delicious smothered in gravy. I want to go back and try other of their poboys!

Good shrimp po boy and banana bread pudding. A good size line to place an order bit worth it. Friendly staff and comfortable environment. My friend from Seattle was curious about the bags hanging on the tent eating area holding water with a penny in it. Staff said it was to keep flies away but would not share recipe. Highly recommend.
