Portsmouth Humane Society

I wanted to adopt a cat or kitten as a companion for my rescued chihuahua. She was raised around cats and enjoys their company. I found the facility to be spotless, the employees and volunteers very friendly and helpful, and the animals cared for as if they were already someone's pet. I called during the hurricane crisis, when shelters were trying hard to make room for incoming animals from hurricane zones. I ended up becoming a foster parent for a mama cat and her six kittens, one of which I adopted for Sophie and me. I've been fostering ever since and it is the best job I've ever had, even without a paycheck. I'm in the facility often for kitten check ups etc. and I can tell you they are a wonderful team who truly care about their animals.

I have never experienced such a lack of empathy from a organization until today! I called the Portsmouth Humane Society and inquired about surrendering an animal that is almost 15 years old, severely ill, and suffering. I was told there was nothing that could be done until the next available appointment that was TWO weeks away. I continued to explain to the young lady the financial situation of the owner and not being able to afford Vet care and the severity of the dogs condition, the staff members response was "there is nothing they can do". I asked to speak with a manager and was connected with Zack (Animal Care Manager) that gave a Vets information that MAY be able to assist. When I asked Zack for his last name he refused to provide it. The biggest disappointment was not that the shelter was unable to provide immediate care but the fact I had to practically beg them to assist me and finally they provided a Vets information.

Really nice facility with knowledgeable caring staff! We adopted a shepherd husky mix last week. We were able to come back with the entire family including our kids and only dog for a meet and greet. PHS will always have a special place in my heart!

What can you not say good about This shelter.The Staff cares always goes out of their way to help.Every time I go there The animals are well taken care of. I watch and listen to the Staff there when they don't see me and everything I see and here is good. I would recommend addopting A new pet or should I say a new family member here.please donate something When you go to any humane society. Even if its a couple 50 cent ball because It still adds up.

Great place for someone looking for a pet ASAP. Friendly employees that genuinely care for the animals and do their best to match animals with a home that fits their needs.
