We loved our stay! Especially our incredible guide Tiamu, who was so happy and motivated to get us great sightings. We loved our room permanent tented room with a lovely balcony and great bath, and a huge king bed. The only downside is that it gets very cold in winter. They did a good job of heated blankets and a heater over the bed but it was hard to get up in the morning! The food was pretty good and the service was very friendly. We loved the watering hole and watching elephants and having breakfast outside by the pool, watching zebras or other animals. It’s very peaceful. Keep in mind it’s one of the most economical lodges in Madikwe, so it’s not as high end as most of the others but it’s about 30% of the price, so it ends up being great value. Included all meals and 2 game drives a day not drinks so for what we paid it was excellent value. We saw 4 of the big 5 no leopard. We loved it!
Thakadu is just amazing. We have been there a bunch of times now and everything is always amazing. The food is to die for, the only real problem is deciding what to eat. We always choose different meals, so that we can taste each of them. The service is also always amazing. The staff remember us every time we go, as though we're their most regular guests, but I'm sure we're not. This time we went for our anniversary, and when we got back to the room after dinner, they had set up a beautiful candle lit bath for us. It was absolutely amazing. Obviously one of the main reasons to go is for the abundance of wildlife. Madikwe has the big 5. They also have a huge number of birds, so if you or someone you k ow is a birder, this is a must. Rooms: The rooms are fixed structure tents. It feels like camping, but with all the luxuries included.
It's out of the main reserve. So you have to travel a long way to get to the main viewing areas. No staff to see you back to your room at night. Food amazing. Bar staff Ida wonderful. Singing and dancing great fun. Waiting staff Tullie wonderful. Half management not great.
The service from every staff member was of a very high standard. The guide went above and beyond to show us as much as he could on the game drives. Wildlife was abundant. Food was excellent. A most enjoyable stay.Rooms: 4/5
Such a special place. We had a wonderful stay. Excellent service, food, accommodation. And the game drives were magnificent - so much game to see. The staff were so attentive and welcoming - they even went out of their way to make me a birthday cake! The best of South African hospitality Rooms: 5/5
Fantastic bush adventure My wife and I spent three nights in the Thakadu River Camp, first time on safari. The first thing to mention is the staff. Everybody, from the manager to the gardener and the night guard, was extremely friendly and attentive. All the rangers, particularly our guide Percy, made sure to make each game drive an exciting and entertaining experience. We explored the very multifaceted landscapes of Madikwe and saw a huge variety of animals, including four of the big 5. The tents are spacious and clean, with a balcony to observe wildlife by the river or meet monkey families. The same goes for the main lodge and the pool. Also the food was excellent and the kitchen attended to individual wishes. Maybe not as luxurious as other lodges, but a very authenic bush experience around people who truly care about their guests. Perfect for people looking for a bit of an adventure.
We had an absolutely sensational time at Thakafu River Camp. Medikwe far exceeded expectations and we met so many people that were coming back for their 2nd, 3rd or 4th safaris here. We saw countless animals in the first few drives and the camp is incredibly well situated to view wildlife from the pool area. To call the accommodation ‘tents’ is to say they have the outdoor appeal and feel, but are still luxurious. The service & guides are second to none and the food was unbelievable. Includes sundowners. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Located inside the Madikwe private game reserve, Thakadu River Camp was kurz First Stop. The main guest area as well as the tents are very inviting and offer comfore places to spend the time in the camp. The staff were all very polite and accomodating even to extra requests. We always felt welcome. The food we were offered showcased a great variety, was always well prepared and seasoned.
All in all amazing 5* experience. The glamping tents are better equipped than some hotel rooms we've been to. Absolutely bug free, with mosquito net, rain shower and a separate toilet. The staff is really nice and always helpful. They walked us to the tent at night after dinner. The food is first class. The chef deserves a medal. Also one of us was a celiac and they prepared all her meals gluten free, separate pans and everything. They even brought a gf muffin wrapped separately for a safari break. And then there's the safari. We were super lucky and saw the big 5 on the first day! The leopard just briskly crossed the road on our way back to the camp, but that counts, too. Otherwise you can see all the animals really up close, lions, hyenas, rhinos, elephants, wild dogs, baboons plus of course countless zebras, impalas, birds etc. We saw the predators hunting a couple of times. It was one of the most immersive experiences in my life. Now just a few cons / warnings: The bush is LOUD at night. I had to use earplugs to be able to sleep. Didn't seem to bother anyone else though. There's a lot of black wasps in the lounge area. One guest actually got stung. There's luckily no bugs on the safari drives though, for some reason. There's no internet and barely any mobile coverage in the tents. It didn't bother us too much and they're working on extending the WiFi to the tents soon. The access road to the gate and then after the gate to the camp is proper dirt road. Very bumpy. Luckily we rented a crossover but I'd be a bit concerned driving a low clearance car. I would recommend Thakadu river camp to anyone in a heartbeat!
A very special place. Staff were particularly good. Food excellent. Safari experience couldn't have been better. Loved it all. Just glad we didn't see snakes and drivers!!Rooms: 5/5
