Beautiful park, nice campsites, well-maintained facilities. Definitely don't ignore the instructions about securing your coolers/food containers from the horses! Or just your containers in general - they tend to go through things even with no food in them, just to check or to make a mess because they're mad you locked your cooler. The walk-in sites are beautiful - just don't under-pack on the warm clothes! There can be quite a bit of wind, so put your tend behind a dune and bring a bunch of layers and you'll be fine!

I finally made it to Assateague State Park mid-April. It was too early to get busy, not tourist season yet. I walked 1.25 miles along the camping area and back looking for wild horses. On the way back, not too far from the backing lot, I finally saw 4 horses! Yeah! The beach area was spacious, and camping area was very clean. At the campsite, it has plenty of RV parking, and it also has BBQ Grills. I was walking with my 2 little dogs, and when they stepped on to the grass, those little tiny peppercorn size with sharp spikes plant things would get in between their toes and pads. It really hurt them. Be careful if you have pets or kids playing in the grass.

Doesn't get much better than this. Absolutely beautiful and serene. Wild horses on the beach, camping on the beach. We loved it until the storm came in. Always be prepared for anything and go to enjoy yourself. Future summer destination for my family for sure. Plus ocean city isn't far away if you want a little more of the businesses scene.

We camped over Memorial Day weekend with our travel trailer and had a great time. Beautiful beach, camp sites are paved and level, bathhouses were clean. The flat paved roads around the camp loop were perfect for our 7 year old daughter to ride her bike and we could watch her from our campsite. It was cool to see the horses who decided to visit our loop the first day. They are not shy and will walk right up to your site with you standing there, sniffing and checking out your coolers and gear for something to eat. Heed the warning signs and give them plenty of space and don't feed them. We witnessed a mare, that wasn't too happy with another mare, turn around and kick her with both rear hooves right in her side. They are wild animals, not pets.
There are plenty of flat paved hiking/biking paths to get around the park. Nice visitor center with interactive exhibits located at the main entrance to the park before you cross over the bridge to Assateague. A nice grill and gift shop that serves the usual sandwiches, cafe grub, and ice cream by the scoop (Hershey's) located by the Ranger Station next to the campground. There are a couple of docks on the bay side where you can do some crabbing. It's close to ocean city with plenty of restaurants and amenities if you want to venture out. We went out to Dumster's Ice Cream parlor one night after dinner for some home made ice cream which was only about 6 - 8 miles away.
Things to consider when camping. The wind is constantly blowing off the ocean which made it hard to start a campfire. It got down in the 60's at night so bring warm clothes. We had a storm move through one night and destroyed our free standing canopy as well as half the other campers in the park. In hind sight i should have removed the canopy off the frame before going to bed. You will need long tent stakes for the sandy soil. I used the screw in plastic ones (Walmart) which worked great. H Loop is the only loop in the park with electricity hook ups. The mosquitoes were out in full force so bring plenty of bug spray. As many as there were, surprisingly we only got bitten a few times. I'm not sure if it was the repellent our they were not feeding heavily yet being so early in the season and with the cool weather. The black flies that others mentioned were not out yet, thank goodness.
It's definitely worth the trip!

Information about dogs being allowed on the beach -/some signs say dogs are allowed but only at certain times of year ( off season). Day pass was 5$ not 20$. We had a very nice time. Ample bathrooms/ showers/changing areas. Beach was clean, as coolers are not supposed to be on the beach, and bags are provided for trash.
