It's May 1st and the visitor center, beach, and south cell trails are closed :( Sadly found out by Kayaking all the way out there. Very little interpretative signage unless you walk up the boardwalks past the "Area Closed" signs to the back of the buildings. The signage states that the beach is closed Tues and Wednesday. Prior to the trip I could not find these types of details on the DNR Website. Apparently the "beach" includes the trails too. There was a saw horse at the beginning of trail stating - closed to the public. Despite this the camping sites are in cool locations and it looks like cool island to walk around. I look forward to coming back to explore but I wish there was more information provided online. Make sure to call ahead before your trip to save you a let down.

Great place to take the family! A must is the bike/walking trail, free bikes to use. They have a volleyball net, camping and plenty of bird watching. They always have something going on for the kids. Check out the calendar when you get to the island. Say hi to park ranger Molly she is awesome.

The island, initially a controversial project involving dredge from the bay, has become a haven for wildlife (especially birds!) and boaters alike. Wade off your boat and take a spin around the island on a free bicycle 'rental' or rent a campsite overnight. Enjoy a Chesapeake Bay treasure... not a natural formation, but one that's shown great benefit.
