Motel 6 Des Moines East - Altoona

Yikes. The outside of the hotel looks nice - and the check in area is clean and bright. My hotel room...not so much. It was DARK - the lighting was very poor. The floors were laminate - which I don't mind - but they were in such POOR shape, big holes in the floor and along the walls. I was nervous to walk around barefoot. The showers were clean and the water hot - but again, dark and dim lighting. Also - my window was tricky to lock and the screen on the outside was really busted. Like someone tried to break in?! The staff was friendly and accommodating - but I was honestly a little nervous to stay there overnight by myself (27 year old, 130 pound female). The price was cheap - $60 - and it was an uneventful stay. Would I stay again? Probably not. But if you are looking for NO FRILLS and a cheap place to crash, it's better than sleeping in your car.

When we entered the lobby at 1645, there was no desk clerk. We waited several minutes and no one appeared. My husband walked around toward the pool and found the desk clerk and several other employees smoking. We had reservations for a king room but we were told at 4:45 that the room was not cleaned yet (posted check out time was noon). We were given a double queen room. The motel was filthy!!! Our room had a bag over the smoke detector and the laminate in the dirty bathroom was curling up on all 4 sides. The ceiling over the shower looked as though it could fall down any time. What a horrible motel! I guess it's what you pay for....

Our room was very clean and spacious. We had a small dog & a cat traveling with us and they were very comfortable. The beds are a bit too firm for us, and there were some people who made a lot of noise in the hallway during the night, which woke us up several times. But, all in all it was a good place to spend the night with our pets, on the way across country.

No water pressure in the shower. Sheets did not seem clean, as we found what looked to be like a stain of some sort. Outside our room smelled of pot throughout the motel. I had reserved a room with 1 queen size bed, I was told there was only 2 bed rooms available. The front desk people were very nice.

Guest service person was not very friendly or helpful to point us to our room. Kept carrying on personal conversations with other staff, while helping us. Walking into our room, there were dirty towels on the floor. The bathroom tub had a barely patched up hole in it and white tile pieces from the ceiling in the bottom of it. The toilet barely flushed and a few bugs were crawling on the wall next to it. We tried the lights which struggled to even turn on. The bed smelt of Urine with terrible stains on the skirt of it. We checked out the pool area to see if swimming might be possible. The indoor pool floor had cigarette butts, used bandaids and finished smoked blunt wraps around it. It was my first night out without my 3 kids in 2 years and I felt like I was staying in a horror movie hotel. Thank god it was only for 1 night. I will NEVER stay here again!!!
