Description

As a natural heritage site, Grootfontein farm is committed for posterity to the preservation of one of the few remaining wilderness areas. Owned by the Olivier brothers, Grootfontein farm adjoins the Groot Winterhoek Mountain Catchment Area and the Cederberg Leopard Conservation Area and is a successful example of agritourism.

The rivers have channeled their way through rock formations into deep pools and waterfalls. There are several caves on the farm, some of which are decorated with paintings. All rock art is protected by the National Monuments Act and the best means of preservation is restricted access.

The rustic and tranquil campsite surrounded by wild mountains offers meditative peace and quiet and is a balm for the soul. A spectacular mountain pool with waterfall is within a 5 minute walk.

Those who don't want to camp can book one of our cottages.

Vegetation
Vegetation consists of a variety of Mountain Fynbos. In summer the Ericas are particularly beautiful and the veld resembles a colourful patchwork. The endemic Ixianthus Retzoides commonly known as River Bells grows along the Ratel River.

Wildlife
The area is a sanctuary for several wildlife species and someimes you can hear the cries of Baboons as they forage in the mountains. Beaverlac's rich diversity of birds includes the majestic Black Eagle, Jackal Buzzard and colourful sunbirds and is truly a paradise for bird lovers.

Our rivers are home to Clanwilliam Redfins and the rare Clanwilliam Yellowfish, both protected species. Bass occur in abundance. Fishing in the Olifants is a 5km walk or cycle so make a day of it and pack a picnic basket.

The area hosts several species of which the Rhebok and Klipspringer are most likely to be spotted, unlike the caracal, wild cat and shy leopard.

Beautiful spot but gets mega busy on a long weekend and can get quite noisy. Best to visit during the week if you seek peace and quiet. For families with kids it's fun visiting on a weekend. Picturesque pools and lovely short hikes along the river always keeps me going back.Location: 5/5
Midweek is just very peaceful with only a few campers. Plenty of hot water in the shower. Clear evening gave an incredible show from the heavens as the Milky Way lit up. Walked down to the Oliphants river... a bit boring along the farm road but the deep pool at the river made up for it. The walk up to Leopard Rock was more challenging and varied. Loved it.
Very fun. Has lovely trails to beautiful waterfall spot where you can swim and enjoy some snacks. It's a dog friendly place. Has nice cabins, if you do not have a tent. Doesn't have any cellphone service, therefore great if you need a get away trip Would definitely recommend this place.Service: 4/5
A wonderful place to connect with nature, and some of the most exquisite rock pools you'll ever swim in. The campsite has no electricity and you camp on mostly sand; no sites are allocated so you basically find a spot and pitch your tent. There are plentiful shade so you would probably find a tree hopefully, since the area gets really hot. The bathrooms are really basic and too few for the number of campers, resulting in a less than clean feel. I must add that you can have a hot shower if you're prepared to wait, and flush toilets with the same note. If you're brave, the one ablution block with only cold river water is actually the cleanest, and definitely the most refreshing. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, which is a pleasant bonus for pet owners. Our favourite aspect of the campsite is that it promotes "peace and quiet", and that no music or noise is tolerated. This forms a significant part of the connection with nature while camping there.
If you want to camp enclosed with GOD'S incredible creation, peace and tranquility....and a love for dogs as this place is a campsite where dogs are welcomed...then this is the place for you. Once here....there is so much to explore. There are majestic waterfalls , stunning rock pools....a cave with waterfalls....a bum slide ...hikes of various lengths . A shop on site, supplying all your needs and those of the kids. .... Birds singing in the morning to wake you..... Sites are not demarcated., we were ,prior to going,as this was our first time, concerned as to how this would work,as we were a large family group, but it worked out so well....you just drive around....and choose your spot. Be warned....the pass up to the campsite..it is not a problem for vehicles but it is painful for any driver that suffers with " fear of heights ". ... The other area where it looses brownie points is that there are too few abultions..... But what an incredible time we had .
It is such a lovely family friendly place. There's a beautiful main natural pool waterfall and a few more if you want to hike. You can camp anywhere . Just no music which is not a big deal. Overall a lovely place.
Quiet, family-friendly atmosphere with easy to moderate hikes departing from the camp site. Wide variety of nearby rock pools, perfect for lazy days. Excellent and well maintained camp grounds. On-site shop is fully stocked. The only caveat is that there are no electricity points at the camp site, but the owners are more than willing to lend a hand. Restrooms: Well maintained and clean toilets/showers
Absolutely a lovely place. 100% recommend! The showers can do with a bench or something so your clothes don't get wet. But other than that, I have no complaints.Rooms: 3/5
A stunning place with ample shaded camping space. Swimming in the rock pools is a must! No cell phone reception and very peaceful. The ultimate break from your everyday life.
The camping site feels very disorganized. Rests rooms clean. Millions of flies. Rock pool super awesome. Loved being cut-off with now cellular network and electricity. Great place not to far from home. Restrooms: The ablution blocks were very clean. Hot water was scarce.
