This is still advertised as a rental shop but is being used by the same staff as a used car lot.

The staff was extremely shady about taking a vehicle to a mechanic for a basic inspection.  I had cash in hand and offered the mechanic's contact information. I was ready to purchase a specific car and this was extremely concerning.  The unfortunate truth is that he knew a less discerning person may buy a car in the time I had it at a mechanic on the lift.
