National Car Rental

National rarely disappoints me but this time is an exception. We had reserved a convertible for a long weekend, but when we got to the rental booth we were told none was available, though one was maybe coming in later. We were asked to wait. All the while the agent was on a phone call which seemed to have nothing to do with us or business. After waiting for 10 minutes or so with no results, we were told we could have a Mercedes sedan instead, which we took, but it was small and frankly not that great of a ride. Definitely not a convertible. Confusing controls, uncomfortable seats. I've always been impressed by the attention National pays to its customers. Not this time.

Be careful to review your bill prior to signing the rental contract. The desk attendant at the Norfolk airport tried to automatically include the fuel service charge and insurance options. When I called him out for it he stated "corporate companies usually include those options". As a corporate traveler my company absolutely does not cover those costs and had I not noticed I would have had to pay out of pocket for those expenses.

Cars are clean and getting them at airport is fast and convenient and a Executive Emerald member. Unfortunately, I am not able to utilize any of the advertised benefits associated with the Executive Isle (free vehicle upgrade) requiring me to reserve an upgraded vehicle at extra cost that should not be incurred. This happens at all airports that do not have an Executive Isle.

I picked up my car on a day when it was cool. I joked with the person in the garage that I needed something with seat heaters and she offered to go check out a few of them to make sure I was getting one. I told her not to worry about it but I was impressed by her willingness to go the extra mile. I wish now that I had gotten her name to give her the credit she deserves. I have become very loyal to National due to service like this.

The car selection was good as I had a small 2018 Jeep. I was disappointed in that the vehicle was dirty upon pickup. The customer service when I landed was excellent, and the drop off was just as smooth. I would recommend using the Norfolk Airport National Car Rental facility to anyone.
