The bus terminal is much cleaner and safer than it was in the 80's and 90's. There are several good places to grab a quick bite to eat, but if you're not getting on a bus or the subway, there is really no reason to pass through here. However, if you must, I recommend the Duane Reade. They have everything from aspirin and souvenirs to fresh fruit and cold beer.

The port authority is really huge and you can lose a person in there lol. Seriously! If you are meeting friends be very specific as to where you are meeting them. Luckily there are information centers on almost every floor and aside from the greyhound buses you can also catch the subway here.

If you're not from NYC, you might get lost or scammed easy. There's a lot of people inside asking if you need help, just say no. Huge screens can help you find your bus and signs point you in the right direction. Just make sure to then also check the bus, because they can change as you get up to them! The shops inside are interesting, but not something you really want to stop at unless you don't have a choice.
It's nice to have a hub for transport, but do your research and know where you're going if you're gonna do that.

The bus terminal is well kept and gets you where you need to go. It has some good stores inside to grab food or other on the go products. I can see it being a bit confusing for people who are in a rush or have never been there. It's very easy to find help during the day but late nights can be hard. There's big touch screens to find the gate for your bus which is helpful. The screens some times don't list every gate for the bus you may be looking for.
