Avis does not let you choose at least between two cars as other rentals do.. The rep chooses what she wants for you.. Terrible idea.
The first time- there was a Jamaican lady with very very short hair..this rep was not in a happy mood, she was annoyed that we rented through an app that gave us a discount rather than only from Avis and decided to voice her annoyance...she gave us a compact car with dents and stains on the seats when we actually paid for a standard car. We decided to let it go Because we already waited long enough and had to go out of state. And it was only our first time here
The second time around, the other rep was very kind and gave us a nice premium car as we paid for.. We also told her about our previous experience which may have helped in getting the right size car.
When she gave us the premium Chrysler, it looked great, however the inside was sticky on the dash and the steering wheel was unclean and sticky..it also had smudges on the dash and on the glass on most Windows.. The mirrors had water residue as well which made it unclear to see through it while driving.
Finally as we drove, our family noticed that some LED bulbs went out on the vehicle on its front lights..so one side was brighter than the other as it caused dimming.. We had to clean the inside of the car and decided to report everything else.. We've never had to take time out of our trip to clean two cars back to back from any rental company..nor clean any car from them at all.
We felt if we were able to choose between these and another vehicle as other rentals give the choice we could have went with a cleaner car on the inside and saved ourselves the unnecessary trouble of everything else in both cases between our first time and second time.
We had to report these things to Avis when we returned.
All in all.. The whole idea of not allowing the customer to choose between at least two vehicles is just terrible business.. We like to rent a lot for several family trips in the year, this experience was the worst thus far.
Some of the customer service reps have too much power in choosing the car they like for the specific ppl they want them to have it. According to how they feel about you.
Those who are assigned to clean the car must either sit around or simply do a fast job without putting any effort or detail into their work. Must not care about their company.
It's unfortunate that the owner can read and reply to all of these reviews stating to call Avis and work it out.. and yet still no change in customer service nor cars.

Service was correct in terms of the car rental and answer to our requests. However, the staff gives virtually no attention to customers. We felt very transparent during the few minutes spent at the car rental counter. Avis needs to do better on this.

The car and rental process was accurate and fast. Same for the 43rt street return location on Manhattan.
Looking at other reviews, I could agree that employed has not smiles as big as in other places, but they treat me with good manners, and since I went to Avis to rent car and not with other purpose, I am not going to decrease punctuation.

Picked up a Mazda 3 at Avis JFK for a week rental and noticed soon after that it was sluggish to start. On day three it wouldn't start at all so I called roadside asst. They decided to send a young man to jump start the car despite my warning that it seemed like more of a problem and requesting a replacement. I wasted half a day but the young man assured me a jump start was all I needed.
Next day the car was so dead the key fob wouldn't even open it. Called roadside assist again and they sent a tow who arrived not in ninety minutes as promised but three hours later to drive me in an unsafe vehicle with a driver who was constantly lost to White Plaines for a replacement vehicle. Lost a whole day, got drenched waiting in the rain and not a word of apology from a single Avis employee. When I had to extend my rental due to 2 lost days I was given no consideration at all.
Upon return home, Avis asked me to review them which I did twice. I guess negative reviews get ignored.

Just stepped off the air train or tramway, went to the ground level and exited to only enter the Avis lobby just a few steps. Lobby was nice but was not really greeted till about five minutes after waiting. Rented a certain vehicle and saw three on their lot. They told me they had none available but gave me another car instead which I was fine with. It was a low mileage Charger R/T very clean and new smelling. I returned it no problem. I booked another car again but instead gave me a different car again which I was fine with but had very high mileage, scratches and dents everywhere, smelled like a smoker's car and one headlight was out it was a beat up car. But avis itself is a great rental company.
